As per current data, about 2 mg per square centimetre of skin is the recommended amount of sunscreen to achieve the desired SPF. However, this guideline may not be practical for everyone, and research shows that many people use less sunscreen than recommended.
How to get the right amount of sunscreen for application?
CHOSEN has introduced the Sunscreen Scoop, an accessory designed to help you apply the precise amount of sunscreen for optimal sun protection.
The sun screen scoop is an easy-to-use measuring tool developed based on research conducted by Srinivas et al.. It determines the total quantity of sunscreen needed for the face for both men and women in millilitres (ml).
Based on our findings, an estimated 1.3 ml of SAFESCREEN® sunscreen is recommended for facial application, considering the average surface area of Indian male and female faces as determined in this study. However, considering different facial variability, we have introduced the sunscreen calculator.

Simply enter your height and weight into the calculator, and it will recommend the appropriate amount of sunscreen for your face in millilitres. Then, choose the scoop size that closely matches the suggested amount.
To accommodate various Indian facial needs, we currently offer two variants of sun screen scoops: a 1ml scoop and a 1.25ml scoop.
The SAFESCREEN® sunscreen scoop serves as an accessory to measure the correct amount of sunscreen for each application, ensuring compliance with current sunscreen application guidelines. By using SAFESCREEN® with this scoop, you can achieve the expected SPF level, thus ensuring maximum protection against the sun.
Simply fill the scoop with your preferred SAFESCREEN® sunscreen. If it's pump-based, you may need to dispense 5 to 6 pumps to fill the scoop. For tube-based sunscreen, squeeze directly into the scoop until it reaches the edge. Apply the sunscreen in dots across your face, then gently massage it into your skin for even coverage. Layering can also be done for better distribution.
Yes, ensure to clean the sunscreen scoop after each use to enable reuse for as long as desired.
We generally recommend using a flat scoop, filling it until the product reaches the edge.
For Women:
A flat scoop levelled off to even with the top, is sufficient for the face. For the neck area, one-third to half of the flat scoop is adequate.
For Men:
If sunscreen is not applied to the beard area, a flat scoop is sufficient for the face. Half of this amount is adequate for the neck. For men covering their entire face, including the beard area, add approximately 1/4th more of the recommended quantity.
After each use, clean the sunscreen scoop with a clean cloth or tissue. It can also be washed in clean water and dried with a cloth.
Store the sunscreen scoop in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
